Something Borrowed the Movie Review

Posted on: June 14, 2011

Have you guys ever heard the saying “two’s company, three’s a crowd?”

So what happens when you take two women and one guy and put them in a love triangle?

Complications and a shit load of laughs.

Something Borrowed is based on the best seller by Emily Giffin.

It tells the story of Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin), a single, talented attorney who on the night of her 30th birthday ends up in bed with Dex (Colin Egglesfield), the guy she’s had a crush on since law school. This would have been great except the guy is engaged to her best friend, Darcy (Kate Hudson). Rachel writes it off as a one time thing and blames it on too much alcohol but Dex admits that he wasn’t that drunk when it happened.

If you had a choice between your best friend or true love, which would you choose?

I haven’t read the book but so far I’m loving the movie version.

Rachel and Darcy have been best friends since they were little girls but if you look at them they are completely different. While Darcy loves being in the spotlight, Rachel is the good girl holding her purse. I could really relate to Rachel’s character. She’s nice and everything but she was a little too nice. If you really like someone don’t wait, go for it! Because you don’t, someone else will.

You would think Dex was just stringing along both women he wasn’t. It turns out Dex really did feel the same thing about Rachel. It’s just that they both did what people expected them to do. People expected the gorgeous Dex to hook up the equally gorgeous Darcy and they expected Rachel to be the supportive wallflower.

What the hell happened to following your heart? When did love became a chore?

Everyone was oblivious to Rachel’s dilemma, except Ethan (John Krasinski), her childhood friend. Ethan was awesome. He listened to her and encouraged her to go after her man. He would make both a great best friend or boyfriend. I loved the scene on the beach where he and Dex was playing racket ball. You can tell he really cares about Rachel.

Darcy was my least favorite character. In the beginning when she made that speech at Rachel’s party she managed to turn it around and make it about her. Honestly how self-centered can one person be? It was pretty clear that she and Dex were wrong for each other. When she found out about Rachel and Dex she was mad which was understandable but she cheated on Dex with Marcus (Steve Howey), Dex’s best friend.

So when she screws around with someone else it’s fine but when her fiancé screws around with her best friend it’s wrong. The difference is that Rachel and Dex are actually in love. Marcus was a skirt chasing moron.

The only time I ever saw Darcy and Rachel ever being real BFFs was when they started dancing to Salt-N-Pepper’s “Push It”. They were laughing and having fun. And when Darcy crashed over Rachel’s for the night you saw a different side of her. She tells Rachel how she’s like a sister to her and how she would never let anyone hurt her. Wow! There really was a human being underneath all that glamor. And I thought she was shallow as a kiddie pool.

I have to read the book when I get the chance. Also Something Blue, the sequel, which tells what happened to Darcy after the incident.
