Set Sail On Stranger Tides with Pirates

Posted on: June 27, 2011

When I was little my family and I would go to Disneyland and every time we visit the park, the first ride we rode was the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. It was a family tradition. I remember thinking how cool the ride was. You had buried treasures, scary caves, ships shooting cannons, and of course, pirates. You have pirates raiding towns, chasing women, while drinking rum and singing, “yo ho! yo ho! a pirate’s life for me!”

In 2003, Disney came up with idea of making a movie based on the ride. Pure genius! Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse Black Pearl was a huge success. Soon two more sequels followed Dead Man’s Chest (2006) and At World’s End (2007) and I loved every one of them. And just when I thought it was over they surprise us with a fourth Pirates movie, On Stranger Tides and it didn’t disappoint.

The story centers around our favorite pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), who last we saw was trying to find the Fountain of Youth.  He’s in London because he heard someone has been impersonating him. The impostor turns out to be a woman named Angelica (Penelope Cruz), who’s an old flame of Jack’s. I’m not surprised by this. The man has a history of breaking a few hearts. Unfortunately, this one had a sword and her father was Blackbeard (Ian McShane), the pirate that all pirates fear. Jack sure knows how to pick ’em.

Before you know it Jack is on Blackbeard’s ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, being forced to lead the way to the fountain. But they are not the only ones after the fountain. There’s the Spanish and Jack’s old nemesis Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), who has given up his pirate ways and is now a privateer of King George II’s Royal Navy.

As much as I loved the movie I was sad that Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley) from the first three films weren’t in this one and the old crew Pintel, Ragetti, Cotton and even Marty weren’t in the movie either. Well, at least they had Barbossa, Gibbs (Kevin McNally), and Jack’s dad, Captain Teague (Keith Richards) who made a small appearance.

Blackbeard was really a scary guy. When he’s not killing somebody in his free time he dabbles in the dark arts, like making a voodoo doll of Jack to make sure he doesn’t try to run off or pull a double cross. Even his ship and his crew were frightening. Though some were humans his commanding officers were zombies. As for the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship is made out of the bones of Blackbeard’s victims and when Blackbeard pulls out his sword the ship itself comes to life.

But despite being the baddest pirate on the seven seas, Blackbeard does has his fears. One of his zombie crew members, who has the power to see the future, warned him that he would meet his death by the hands of a one-legged man. That’s why he wants to find the fountain so badly.

As luck would have it that one-legged man happens to be our very own Barbossa. Somewhere between the third and fourth film The Black Pearl was attacked by Blackbeard. The Black Pearl came alive and turned on it’s crew. Barbossa was the only survivor but he had to cut off his own leg to escape.

I knew it! When Barbossa first came out wearing that uniform and that stupid wig I saw right through his little act. He didn’t become a privateer because he turned over a new leaf. He wanted revenge on Blackbeard. Now that’s the Barbossa I know and I love. He would never take orders from some fat king, who cared more about pastries than ruling his country. I have serious respect for Barbossa. Despite only have one leg the man can still fight.

I thought Philip (Sam Swift), the captive missionary and Syrena (Astrid Berges), the mermaid made a cute couple. Even though Philip was a man of god, he was the only one brave enough to call Blackbeard a coward to his face. He was also the only to show Syrena any kindness. There’s a ritual that requires the tear of a mermaid which doesn’t sound so bad except the mermaid usually needs up dead in the end.

My favorite couple by far was Jack and Angelica. Even though they were constantly watching their backs when the other was in the room, you can clearly see they still had feelings for each other. Angelica will be famous for being the only woman Jack Sparrow ever loved.

After watching this movie a sequel is a definite possibility. As long as Jack Sparrow is in it I’m happy.
