Kung Fu Panda Brings the Thunder Again

Posted on: July 8, 2011

We loved Jack Black when he did the voice of Po in Kung Fu Panda. Well, he’s back  for Kung Fu Panda 2.

Po is living his dream as the Dragon Warrior, protecting the Valley of Peace along with his friends and fellow kung fu masters, the Furious Five, Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Viper (Lucy Liu) and Crane (David Cross). Soon they are needed again.

Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) receives word that the leader of the kung fu council protecting Gongmen City, Master Thundering Rhino (Victor Garber), has been killed by a weapon that can defeat kung fu. It was made by the evil peacock Lord Shen (Gary Oldman).

It turns out Shen is connected to Po’s past.

Years ago, Shen’s family ruled Gongmen City in peace. He wanted to use the power of fireworks as a weapon but the court’s goat soothsayer (Michelle Yeoh) predicated that “a warrior of black and white” would one day defeat him. He thought she meant the giant pandas that lived in a peaceful village nearby so he had them all killed. Now that I think about it. Po is the only panda I’ve seen in both films.

I love this movie.

I liked how the Furious Five were more accepting of Po in this film, especially Tigress. They were harsh on him but I watched Secrets of the Furious Five that showed their pasts, I was thinking what a bunch of hypocrites.

Crane was a janitor at a this kung fu academy where people made fun at how skinny he was. Monkey was a trickster that made people slip on banana peels and pulled down their pants. Viper was born without fangs and was a ribbon dancer. Mantis was an impatient and overconfident warrior. Tigress was an orphan with anger issues and everyone was scared of her.

So if you guys could do it, why not him?

When Po found out about his past it was sad but he realized lived a good life. He was raised by his goose father Mr. Ping (James Hong), has friends and achieved his dream, a dream no one believed that would ever come true. He’s still the same hungry lovable panda we fell in love with. Po will always be Po.

Master Oogway from the first movie said it best: “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. But today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.”
