Once Upon a Time

Posted on: June 4, 2012

A lot of new shows came out this year. Some I found interesting enough like, Person of Interest and Grimm. While others like The Secret Circle and The Ringer made me want to put a bullet in my head.

One of my favorites was Once Upon a Time. The show was produced by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, the same guys that did the show Lost. As you can tell from the title the show is about fairy tales.

In the pilot episode we are met with a familiar scene where Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) finds a comatose Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) after eating the poisoned apple given to her by her step-mother, the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla). As expected Charming kisses her and breaking the curse. Now this is usually the part where someone says “and they all lived happily ever after”…well not this time.

Like I said this show is about fairy tales, but not in the way we’re all used to.

On the day of Snow White and Prince Charming’s wedding the Evil Queen arrives and tells them she plans to unleash a curse on everyone in the kingdom. Some time later Snow White and Charming go to Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) for help. He says the evil curse will send them someplace horrible and take away all their happy endings. Their only hope is Snow White’s unborn daughter, Emma (Jennifer Morrison). He says she will return on her 28th birthday to rescue them and the final battle between good and evil would begin.

As Snow White gives birth, the dark curse strikes. Charming places baby Emma in a magic cupboard to send her somewhere safe.

In the present day, Emma Swan lives a lonely life as a bail bondsman and bounty hunter in Boston. On her 28th birthday she is visited by a ten year old boy, Henry (Jared S. Gilmore), who identifies himself as her son, whom she had given up for adoption as a teenager. She takes Henry back to his home Storybrooke, Maine. Along the way, Henry shows Emma a large book of fairy tales and tells her that all the stories in the book are real. Everyone in town is a fairy tale character with no memory of who they really are and that she’s the only one that can break the curse

There’s Henry’s therapist Archie Hopper (Raphael Sbarge), who is really Jiminy Cricket. Snow White is Henry’s teacher, Mary Margaret Blanchard. Prince Charming is a coma patient, named David Nolan. Rumpelstiltskin is now going by Mr. Gold, a pawnshop owner and the wealthiest guy in town. And the Evil Queen is the Mayor of Storybrooke, Regina Mills. She’s also Henry’s adoptive mother.

Of course Emma doesn’t believe but decides to stay when she sees how unhappy Henry is. Emma’s decision to stay in Storybrooke causes the hands of the town clock to move for the first time, since time is frozen in that town.

I loved what they did with this show. They’re retelling classic fairy tales and giving us their back story. Haven’t guys ever wonder about certain characters, like why does Little Red Riding Hood wear that red hood all the time? Why is the Mad Hatter obsessed with hats? And why does the Evil Queen really hate Snow White?

Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz compared Once Upon a Time to Lost. “If Lost was about fathers and sons and redemption. Then this show is about mothers and daughters and hope.”Β

I think that’s the very core of any good story: hope. For those of you who have watched the first season, look at Snow White and Prince “Charming” James.

In the fairy tale world, Snow White and Prince James had to go through a lot of obstacles just to be together. We’re talking vindictive royals, sorcerers, dark magic and all that crap. Yet they didn’t give up. They always found a way back to each other.

In Storybrooke, however, their counterparts Mary Margaret and David aren’t so lucky. When David wakes up from his coma, you find out his married to a woman named Kathryn. But despite that he and Mary Margaret fall in love anyway. I’m a helpless romantic but having an affair with a married man is never a good thing. When Kathryn and everyone else in town finds out Mary Margaret is branded as a home wrecker. But in the season finale when Emma breaks the curse David and Mary Margaret remember who they really are and are reunited for real.

Let’s face it, life can be a bitch. When things don’t go our way, we ask ourselves “what’s the point of trying if bad things keep happening?” Because it’s in our nature to keep trying and hope for the best. That’s why college students study their asses off so they can have a future and why employees work long hours hopping to get that promotion to support their families.

That’s what Emma represents. Ever since she came to town things began to change. Before everyone has been walking around in a haze. Emma being there kind of wakes them up. Regina has up until now had complete power over everyone, but she’s starting to lose that power.

I love the characters in the show. Women like Emma and Snow White are such bad asses and they don’t need a prince to fight their battles. Unless those guys are Prince James and Sheriff Graham, aka The Huntsman (Jamie Dornan, I miss Graham). So hot! I like Henry, he’s a cute kid. And he’s smart. He has that innocence about him and believes in the impossible.

Rumpelstiltskin is by far my favorite character in the whole show. We all know who Rumpelstiltskin is, a trickster who spins straw into gold and has a thing for children. But later on you learn that there’s more to Rumpelstiltskin’s story. One of them being that Rumpelstiltskin is actually the Beast in the story Beauty and the Beast. Emilie De Ravin did a great job as Belle.

Between Regina and Rumpelstiltskin, the bad guys of the show, I believe Rumpelstiltskin has a better chance at redemption and a happy ending than Regina.

Regina has brought misery to everyone around her. I understand why Regina does what she does. She lost the only man she ever loved but instead of taking responsibility for her actions she decides to punish everyone. If she can’t be happy, no one else can. I mean, I believed her when she said she loves Henry. After all she did raise him, but her way of love is possessive. While Emma’s love for Henry is unconditional. Even when Emma gave him up as a baby she did it out of love because he wanted him to have a good life. Regina wants to be happy but she was warned when she cast the Dark Curse that it will leave a hole in her heart that can never be filled. All magic comes with a price.

While Rumpelstiltskin became the way he is because he wanted to protect his son, Baelfire from being taken to war when he was only fourteen. When he lost him, he spent all that time trying to find him. That’s why he created the Dark Curse that sent everyone here, “a land without magic”, because Bae is here. Also in episode 12, Skin Deep, when Moe French (aka, Belle’s father in the fairy tale world) stole Belle’s teacup Mr. Gold beat the living crap out of him. It was clear that he still loves her after all this time. I know Rumpelstiltskin won’t entirely change over night but now that he has Belle back I think having her around will help him become a better man and help him find Bae.

Everything Regina did was out of hate for Snow White. While everything Rumpelstiltskin did was out of love to protect his son.

I’m so happy the show is coming back for another season. Emma may have broken the curse, but it’s far from over. Now that Rumpelstiltskin brought magic to Storybrooke things are gonna get a lot more interesting. And the real fight between good and evil can begin.
