The Purpose of Fanfiction Writing

Posted on: June 11, 2012

Do you guys know what fanfiction is?

For those of you who don’t,  it’s fiction written by fans about their favorite TV shows, or movies, or books. Haven’t you guys ever watch a TV show and wished things could have been done differently? Like, you wish they didn’t kill off a character, or wish a certain couple got together?

It bascially allows fans to go wild with their imaginations. I mean, you can make your favorites characters do whatever the hell you want. You can have them do a crossover, like have Spider-Man meet Harry Potter. You can put characters in different time periods or places, like send Buffy the Vampire Slayer to outer space. The possibilites are endless.

I know some people won’t understand the whole point of writing fanfics, but I discovered two things about fanfic writing.

1. It’s a great way to practice your writing. It may be fanfiction, but the key word is still fiction. Even though you’re using someone else’s characters you still have the create the storyline and the settings and all that. Hell, you can add your characters to spice things up. And once you’ve mastered writing fanfics, you can write own original stories.

2. I think this is the most important thing about fanfiction: it’s fun! I’ve been writing fanfiction for a good number of years and I can honestly say that I really enjoy it. Not only does it help with my creativity, but it’s a nice hobby to have when I have nothing better to do. In fanfiction, I can give my favorite characters the happy ending they deserve or kill off the ones that I don’t like. Again, endless possibilities.

If you are interested in fanfiction, a great place to start is fanfiction.net. It’s the biggest fanfic site online. I’ve been a member for years.

Absolutely true. I made my bones writing fanfiction and making all the embarrassing mistakes an author could possibly make, but I was having fun and learning my craft at the same time.

I think a lot of people who write fanfiction and “get over it” try to keep that under wraps, but I’m not afraid to say this is how I got to meet the tools needed to write competent fiction.

I know, right? I just love writing fanfics. Right now I’m working on a few new ones for Once Upon a Time. From writing fanfiction, I’ve learned to better myself as a writer.

Exactly. And it’s fun. Writing should be fun first and foremost.
